Survivors of abuse often struggle to set and maintain healthy boundaries. Within the abuse dynamic boundaries were unacceptable for the abuser, who will have constantly overstepped. They often view their target as an extension of themselves. As a tool to fill their physical and emotional needs, not as another individual.

That means that once we leave the abusive dynamic, we have been programmed not to maintain boundaries. We were taught that having boundaries is selfish, inconsiderate and rude.

This is not a healthy situation to be in, and so it is important to learn the skill.

How You Can Begin Learning to Maintain Them

Resilience Coach, Michael Ballard, and our own Mags join forces on this podcast about healthy emotional boundaries. They discuss why they are important, how we are affected by them. In addition, they give you some tips on how to begin practicing and implementing them in your own life.

While I may technically be the Director here at SwanWaters, my unofficial title is Healing Cheerleader! I’m a survivor of childhood emotional abuse and workplace bullying. And believe me when I say that I’ve walked the walk when it comes to healing from trauma. I firmly believe that we can undo some of the damage that abuse has done to us, and learn the necessary skills to handle life and all it brings us.
